Case study

Normandy Barracks, DST (Leconfield)

The project:

Normandy Barracks, located in Leconfield, East Yorkshire, is home to the Defence School of Transport (DST). Formed in 1996, the DST is the centre of excellence for providing driver and transport management training to personnel from the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines. APA Concrete Repairs Ltd were contracted to undertake external repairs to both the water tower and low-level reservoir situated within the Barracks.

The solution:

Visual and hammer tap surveys were first undertaken in order identify the necessary repairs. Areas of defective concrete were then broken out, the substrate and existing reinforcement were prepared, and the repair areas were reinstated using proprietary hand applied repair mortars. The flat roof of the low-level reservoir was re-waterproofed with a liquid applied reinforced waterproofing membrane that was designed to overlay the existing deteriorated system whilst the water tower underwent a process of repairs and coatings.

The outcome:

The refurbishments within the Normandy Barracks compound were completed by APA in the summer of 2014 and ensured the low-level reservoir and the water tower were restored to their original glory, with the addition of a guaranteed roof waterproofing membrane providing long-term enhanced protection against any potential future degradation.
